How can I get my guinea pig to exercise?

With a hamster, you may just toss a wheel in it is cage and it’ll hop right on it and chug away – going nowhere – and he’ll be utterly happy. It reminds me of the humans you see at the health club – chugging away on their elliptical trainers – going nowhere – but getting healthier. Toss a wheel into your guinea pig’s cage and see what happens. Chances are she’ll chew on it – that is until she gets bored and ignores it. You also recognise what to do with a dog. Put it on a leash and take it for a walk. When was the last time you saw anybody outside walking their guinea pig? What’s good for dogs is not inevitably good for guinea pigs.

So how do you give your pig exercise to make sure he stays healthful and happy?

Simple – you let him run free. Find a safe area in your home that is confined and free of hazards like electrical cords. Guinea pigs are illfamed chewers and, given the chance, may effortlessly chew through the insulation on an electrical cord and electrocute themselves. Cavies spend most of their lives in their cage. If your pig is confined in an area too little to exercise (such as a usual size fictitious cage), she will need to get at least 25 minutes of free-running exercise each day. If your pig is being held in a more spectacular C&C (Cubes and Coroplast) cage, then she may be already getting a reasonable amount of exercise.

If your cavies live in a big cage, watch them when they are in their home. Do they scurry around a lot? Do they run “laps” around the cage? Do you see a lot of popcorning? Do your pigs in general walk and move around much of the time? If so, then you may be sure they are getting at least a good deal of exercise. My recommendation is that if your pig is in general active in it is cage, then it must still get out to actually stretch it is legs and run free at least 25 minutes each other day. If you have a sedentary pig who in general just eats and sleeps, then – even even though it may live in a huge cage – I still commend that it get out to explore and exercise daily for at least 25 minutes.

Even if your pig is “hyperactive” in his cage I still commend that he get out at least each other day for not one thing other than mental stimulation. Changing your pig’s surroundings and exposing him to new and stimulating situations will stimulate his brain and cause new neural connections to form. Pigs are curious little creatures who love to wander and explore – sniffing and nibbling on new objects as they discover new things.

Guinea pigs spend most of their lives confined in their living quarters. If you have provided them with a huge cage such as a C&C cage, then they will have a dandier chance for exercise in their own home. Regardless, your pigs ought to still get out and explore daily, if possible, to insure that they get adequate exercise and mental stimulation. It is your obligation as a caring pet owner.

4Good product, misleading picture
By Jessie1988
I thought I was buying the whole pen when I purchased it because the picture was mis-leading to me, so when just the bottom arrived I was a little peeved. I just wanted everyone to know you’re not purchasing the cage too, just the blue bottom. Other than that I like the idea and am anxious to use it on the cage I purchased.

4Good, but be careful
By Poppins
The mat doesn’t fit as neatly around the playpen as the ad shows, but the velcro holds it in place well enough. I found out the hard way that this mat isn’t leakproof; even even though I cleaned up my ferret’s accidents as they occurred, I found urine burns on my wood floor when I moved the mat. So now I use newspaper or cage diapers with it. When the mat gets in truth nasty, I take it into the yard, hose it off, and let it dry. Some of the stains will still be there, but they won’t smell.

1Small Animal Playpen Mat
By Linda
The mat was a disappointment. I thought that it would be easy to place around the pen. It’s not, and rather cumbersome. Also, the mat does NOT repel moisture. If my animal had an accident, it would leak through. I have found that a heavy tarp does a better job, at a much for less price.

I’ve read this somewhere on Yahoo! Answers before, so I give credit to that guy or girl… Try spreading and hiding it’s food in the cage, instead of piling it in a bowl. It would make it more active.

Now this just hit me out of the blue: Try taking your guinea pig out on an empty stomach, that way it’ll do almost anything for the food. Move the food around a little to get it familiarized. Then, just kinda move your hand in a trail for your guinea pig to follow.

I dunno if this will work for your guinea pig, but try anything once! I hope this helps and good luck! :)

does he try to get out of your hand when you pick him up? If so just keep letting him go from hand to hand, that will exercise him.

Um, If you go to a pet store, you can buy a harness and leash for a guinea pig. And you could walk him down the street and back once every day. That’s what I do. Oh and when you get back, you should give him a treat like a slice of carrot or something.

Get an exercise wheel and if he doesn’t now how to use it ( like my hamster use to )

Pick him up put him in it and just gently move it and he will eventually get how to do it!!

empty stomach, and place food in diffrent areas. if you use pellets then take one pellet, place it on one side, watch him walk over there, and then take another, put it on the other side. keep doing that. maybe you can put him in a new place for him to explore.

do not use leashes and walk him. he will not appreciate it. this can choke guinea pigs, and often times the leashes and harnesses are poor quality so guinea pigs could easily slip out of the harness and run free

Try taking him into a secure area and tying his favourite food/treat to some string and run around the room! lol!
Also, try looking up “Guinea Pig Diets” on google and try and cut some of the more fattening things out of his diet.

    Michelle

try playing with it. just u two. try wearing clothes with pockets and hoods so it can explore.

  10. Albert says:

    Lon

let it run around on the floor
make a maze for it to try to figure it out
make a little hut thing with rooms with different things in it so it can explore

    Kerri

Well maybe try encouraging him to excersise. hold some ledduce far away from the piggie. which makes him want to go and get so he might walk or maybe even run!GOOD LUCK!

Please do NOT get an exercise ball for your guinea pig. #1, they’re usually too freaked out and don’t move any way. #2, their backs cannot curve down like hamsters do, and it’s very possible to break their backs if you put them in a ball.

The best thing to do is feed a good PLAIN pellet, that is fresh and has added vitamin C. I recommend Oxbow for those that can order over the internet. You want to also give him plenty of timothy (or brome, orchard, or sweet meadow) hay (not alfalfa), and a MAX of 10% of his diet should be treats. 10% is about the size of an average baby carrot.

Your guinea pig is probably scared when you put him on the floor in a big room. Try letting him run around the bathroom floor (cleaned of course, with towels so he doesn’t slip), and eventually he should warm up enough that you can move him to another room.

You can also put his food in one corner of the cage, and his water in another, with some pavers (bricks) in between for him to crawl over or go around.

Have you seen ? A bigger cage so he can exercise on his own is best. Another guinea pig also gets them to move more.

Also there are no teddy bear guinea pigs. Teddy bear refers to hamsters. They are just teddies.

You should also review his diet too much fattening treats and poor diet can lead to obesity.

    Eve

maybe get him another guinea pig to play with?
    that’ll keep him active.
