5What a outstanding book on helmets!
By David R. Thom
This book by one of the gurus of helmetry is a outstanding combining of Big Beautiful Pictures, interesting historical narrative and even real science of how helmets work and why. Since it came out two years ago, I have personally commended this to numerous people who indicated an interest in knowing more when it comes to helmets, normally for professional reasons. I will proceed to commend it because it is far more than a nice coffee table book.

3Pretty pictures do not a good book make
By Sebastián Arboleda
This book is unluckily a very strange hybrid amongst an “eye-candy” coffee-table hit parade and a severe book that in truth engages you with it is text and captions. The author has tried to convey a heap of of the hard selections that helmet designers have to make while designing headgear to pass the stringent standards test, but unluckily his tone and some of the captions he uses do not always make sense or engage the reader in a significant way.

Perhaps the biggest criticism that may be made to the book is that the text portions describing the standards in head shelter are very much disconnected from the substantial effigy bank collected by the writers in their compilation for the book. The book is a strange hybrid in the sense that it is scientific content is neither deep sufficient for the devoted scientist or engineer to find it useful, nor is it accessible sufficient for the layman to comprehend without a reasonably comprehensive scientific or technology education.

Having said that, if you are mesmerized in helmets, or are looking for a book to inspire you in designing a new one without having to engage in heavy Google-Image searching a perfective helmet to be inspired from, then perchance this is the book for you. If you are a scientist or an engineer, however, perhaps you would be better off starting out at the regulatory agencies’ web sites and going through their material rather of relying on this workpiece to finish your research.
